John Pickering, the founder of the Pickering family in Salem, was born in England, in 1615, according to a record made in the family Bible of his grandson John Pickering ... living in Salem in the early part of the year 1637" (town grant Feb. 7, 1637 "Jn°. Pickering, Carpenter granted to be inhabitant"). Will of John Pickering of Salem, dated 30:5m:1655, proved 1:5m:1657: "I bequeath to my son Jn° Pickeringe two parts out of my estate ... I bequeath to my son Jn'than one part and halfe ... the other pt & halfe to my wife Elizabeth ... I make my beloued wife Elizabeth & my sons John and Jonathan my Executrix & Executors." "1-70. I. 1. A shipbuilder" ... deed of May 27, 1706: "Joseph Hardy, shipwright, son of Joseph Hardy, Jr., late of Salem deceased; Ebenezer Lambert, shipwright, and Mary his wife, daughter of said Joseph Hardy, Jr., and Seeth Hardy, singlewoman, all of Salem, only surviving heirs of said Joseph Hardy, Jr." ... "Joseph Hardy was the son of Joseph and Mary (Grafton) Hardy, of Salem." Peirce Family Record (1894): "Capt. Joseph Hardy, Second ... died 14 April 1687.
