Jonathan Budington, the grandfather of Stephen B., was a native of Groton, Conn. In early life he followed the sea for many years as captain of a sailing vessel, and was engaged in the West India trade up to the time of the Revolutionary War. ... At the close of the war Captain Budington settled in Leyden ... His death in 1810 ended a long and successful life. His family consisted of four children; namely, Jonathan, Aaron O., Stephen, and Priscilla H.
