Philemon Stout (15 May 1785 – 31 January 1846) was born in New Jersey to Jedediah Stout. He married Penelope (Anderson) Stout. He had 7 children, including Charlotte A. Stout, Elihu Stout and Eliza P. Stout. He died in 1846, in Ball Township, Sangamon County, Illinois.

Life and records

Philemon Stout (1785–1846) was a farmer and early settler of Ball Township, Sangamon County, Illinois. Born in New Jersey on May 15, 1785, he was taken to Fayette County, Kentucky, as a child, married Penelope Anderson there in 1810, and farmed in Scott and Fayette Counties before bringing his family overland to Illinois in 1836, where he bought 350 acres and lived out his life.

Early life

Philemon Stout was born May 15, 1785, in New Jersey. Power's 1876 sketch says that "in 1789 was taken by his parents to Fayette county, Kentucky," and the 1891 county album likewise says he "in childhood went with his parents to Fayette County, Ky." County histories trace the family line through Richard and Penelope Stout's youngest son David, then Benjamin, Jedediah and Philemon.

Marriage and family

On February 8, 1810, in Woodford County, Kentucky, he married Penelope Anderson, a native of Mercer County, New Jersey. The couple first settled in Scott County, Kentucky, and in 1820 moved back to Fayette County. They were the parents of thirteen children, seven of whom grew to maturity:

  • Jackson (1814–1839), who married Matilda Willian and died in Ball Township
  • Elihu (b. 1816, Scott County, Kentucky)
  • Charlotte A. (b. 1817)
  • Philemon Jr. (1822–1910)
  • Mary (1825–1890)
  • Eliza P. (b. 1827)
  • Martha A. (b. 1830)

Removal to Illinois and farming

In 1836 Philemon and Penelope Stout came with their seven children to Sangamon County, Illinois, traveling by team and wagon and crossing the Ohio River at Louisville, Kentucky, and the Wabash at Vincennes. They arrived October 5, 1836, in what is now Ball Township. Philemon bought 350 acres of land there, occupied a log house, and "devoted himself to agricultural employment until his death."

Later life and death

Philemon Stout Sr. died January 31, 1846, in Ball Township. His widow survived him nearly fifteen years; according to the 1891 album she died November 23, 1860, "an inmate of the home of" their son Philemon Jr.

Legacy

The family was, in Power's words, "mostly Baptists." Power recorded the family's test of doubtful claimants to the Stout name: they ask "if he has any knowledge of Penelope, and if he knows nothing of her, they know nothing of him."
